The Mutt-i-gree Curriculum Program

Mutt-i-grees in the Library

Mutt-i-grees in the Library is an exciting initiative that builds on children’s affinity for animals and highlights the unique characteristics and desirability of shelter pets – Mutt-i-grees – to teach essential social and emotional skills. It is an extension of the Mutt-i-grees Curriculum, and aims to enhance children’s self- and social-awareness, relationship skills, and ability to make ethical decisions that benefit people, animals, and the environment through the teaching of empathy and related social and emotional skills.

The Mutt-i-grees in the Library kit includes strategies and materials to actively engage children, teens, and families using activities, crafts, stories, and books about shelter animals. We recognize that public libraries differ in size, resources, and demographics, reflecting the communities they serve. Accordingly, Mutt-i-grees in the Library is designed as a blueprint which libraries can customize to match the needs, characteristics, and interests of the children and families in their communities.

Themes & Core Concepts

Activity Plans

Libraries implementing Mutt-i-grees programming may select from a range of different activities and ideas. We suggest that librarians review the possibilities and make a selection and/or use the activities to inspire other ideas. Our goal is to provide a variety of options from which librarians can select; some libraries may elect to use a phase-in approach, implementing some Mutt-i-grees programming first and others later.

Some of the suggested activities may provide ideas for ways to modify or adapt existing programming to incorporate the Mutt-i-grees theme. Other activities lend themselves to more than one session and may take the form of various types of Mutt-i-grees Clubs. Recurring programming presents opportunities for participants to engage in longer-term projects that help others. Templates for Mutt-i-grees Club membership cards are included in the kit.
