The Mutt-i-grees Curriculum - Calm, Confident and Caring Kids!
The Mutt-i-grees® Curriculum is an approach to teaching children social and emotional skills as well as highlighting the unique characteristics and needs of Mutt-i-grees® dogs awaiting adoption at a shelter.
The Curriculum builds on the research base in the areas of emotional intelligence and social and emotional learning, which focus on facilitating children’s self- and social awareness, relationship skills, and problem-solving abilities as a way to enhance children’s social and emotional competencies and academic skills. It is also an approach to humane education, which at its core seeks to enhance the ability to consider another’s perspective—whether an animal or person—and the impact of one’s actions. Although these fields share an overarching aim of fostering empathy, compassion, and responsible decision-making, previous programming initiatives have focused solely on either traditional humane education or social and emotional learning without recognizing the natural overlap between the two.
In the Mutt-i-grees® Curriculum, we bridge humane education and social and emotional learning. We enhance children’s social, emotional, and academic skills, while increasing awareness of relevant humane issues and conveying the notion that adopting a shelter pet is a responsible choice. By teaching children skills to effectively communicate and manage emotions, and foster empathy (the capacity to take another’s perspective), the Mutt-i-grees® Curriculum supports the development of calm, confident and caring children who can make a difference in the lives of people, animals, and the environment.
