Roberto is a Yorkshire terrier with one eye and a paralyzed tail. I don’t know how he got that way. I only know he was found on the street with a terrible eye infection – maybe he was abused? Maybe he was hit by a motorcycle? I do know that when I first saw him at the shelter it was love at first sight. I rescued him from a shelter in Marrakech, called Nos Amis Pour La Vie (Our Friends for Life) where I volunteer.

I will never forget the day I adopted him. The day my parents said, “yes!” felt like fate had brought us together and he was always meant to be my dog. Roberto is a scruffy, one-of-a-kind rocket, ready to launch at any time. He has such unstoppable energy. He races around the garden, jumping over bushes and any obstacle in his way. Some of the problems I have faced with him are that he likes to hunt down my chickens and chase my cats. Occasionally I see him lurking by the chicken coop waiting for one to come out or dashing after my cats. My family and I have tried to train him.

Pets need love just like us and we all need a family where we belong. Having Roberto means everything to me and I hope having a pet will mean everything for you.

Buthayna, Age 12

We have made some progress with him but he still sometimes chases the chickens. Perhaps this is just instinct? He is a terrier after all, bred to hunt rats and mice. If you are thinking of getting a pet, please adopt and don’t shop. Pet stores and puppy mills treat the animals horribly and there are so many dogs in shelters that need loving homes. Pets are a huge responsibility but they are great fun and they keep you company. Below I have written some advice on keeping pets:

• Ensure your pet is sociable and well trained.
• Learn about their special requirements.
• Provide a nutritious and well-balanced diet.
• Provide suitable housing and bedding.
• Clean up after your pet and de-worm them regularly.
• Protect against disease. Your vet can provide you with advice.

Above all make sure they are loved. Pets need love just like us and we all need a family where we belong. Having Roberto means everything to me and I hope having a pet will mean everything for you.
