Why It's Important
The Mutt-i-grees® Curriculum’s focus on humane education and social and emotional skills provides educators – and parents – with the opportunity to take a holistic approach to educating children, placing equal emphasis on all developmental pathways, not just cognitive development and academics. Of course, children must have core academic competencies. But to succeed in today’s global environment, they must be prepared to communicate, collaborate and appreciate diversity. When children master these and other social and emotional skills, they become better learners, which is why studies have found a correlation between social and emotional learning and academic achievement. We have also found that when educators focus on social and emotional learning in addition to academics, school climate improves and becomes conducive to learning. The link between social and emotional learning is so strong, a leading researcher refers to social and emotional learning as the missing piece in the education puzzle.
