Teacher of the Month: Valerie Lawson
Teachers implementing the Mutt-i-grees® Curriculum are featured in this column. This month's feature is Valerie Lawson from Van Buren County School Based Mental Health office in Clinton, AR.
Valerie Lawson has implemented the Mutt-i-grees® Curriculum since its inception and has presented poster sessions and workshops at several state and national conferences. Valerie has also been instrumental in expanding the scope of the program, engaging high school students to work with younger students. When Valerie was nominated as Featured Teacher, we asked her about her work on the Mutt-i-grees® Curriculum. Here is what she said:
Hi, my name is Valerie Lawson. I work for the Van Buren County School Based Mental Health office in Clinton, Arkansas as a Case Manager. I received a Bachelors and Masters Degree from the University of Central Arkansas in Conway, Arkansas in Family and Consumer Science. I have been teaching Mutt-i-grees® lessons for two years with grades Pre-K through 7th grade. I am currently working with Pre-K, Kindergarten and First Grade students at both Clinton and Shirley Public Schools. In these classes I am incorporating the Mutt-i-grees® Curriculum into a “reading time” which is spent with High School-aged students reading to the younger students. I have piloted the Mutt-i-grees® Parenting Program* and had much success! The parents were excited about the new program and learned a great deal. I look forward to many more sessions with our parents.
*The parenting program Valerie pilot-rested is part of the Mutt-i-grees® Family Series, which will be available soon.
