We love seeing Mutt-i-gree Puppet in action! He had a blast helping students in Mrs. Kayla Moore's class at Sallie Cone Preschool Center in Conway, AR create "D" dog art while discussing decision-making as part of lessons from the Dealing with Decisions theme in the Mutt-i-grees Curriculum. During the crazy holiday rush, it can be easy to forget about those less fortunate than yourself. However, taking time to pause and think about how you can help those in need in your community can be beneficial to everyone involved! Did you know that practicing kindness and compassion is associated with proven health and psychological benefits? This holiday season, Mutt-i-grees students across the country made us proud by organizing service learning projects to benefit animals in need. Check out a few snapshots below of what some schools did:
The lessons in the Mutt-i-grees Curriculum teach critical social and emotional skills, which in turn, help students to connect with their peers, the educators and administrators at their schools, and their communities as a whole. As a way to reinforce the skills learned in the classroom, Norma Meek, Mutt-i-grees Educational Consultant and National Peer Trainer, conceptualized a new initiative focused on community engagement: the Mutt-i-grees retreat. She collaborated with educators in Van Buren County, AR and Boyd County, KY to pilot the program this fall, with fantastic results.
'Tis the season of giving and Mutt-i-grees students are making us proud! In Ashland, KY, members of the Mutt-i-grees Teen Council created a giving tree at their local PetSmart, complete with photo ornaments of adoptable dogs from Ashland Animal Rescue Fund, to promote shelter adoptions in their community. They also collected more than $750 in donations for the shelter! We are happy to report that some of the dogs and cats featured on the tree have since found loving homes.
This fall, students from Boyd County Middle School and Catlettsburg Elementary in Boyd County, KY participated in the school district’s first ever Mutt-i-grees retreat. The goal? To encourage community engagement by offering students a unique opportunity to learn about their county’s municipal departments, historic landmarks, and civic organizations. The retreat began at the Boyd County courthouse with an educational tour of the county seat and historical walk.
